For Inventors
Goals for an Effective Patent Search:
a) Finding a patent that closely matches the current invention.
If one is found: stop working on idea, it’s already done, avoid spending more time/expenses
Or: contact patent holder for licensing or partnership
Or: design around claims, modify design to not be infringing
Or: if closely matching patent is expired, proceed without fear of infringing
b) To have pertinent patents to use in patent application. In “Background” section of your patent application, a description of the “Prior Art” will be needed, i.e. “US Patent 9,123,456 shows XYZ which doesn’t do ABC well and is terrible. The current invention shows DEF which does GHI well and is wonderful.”
c) Get ideas for your patent application write up, drawings and design.
d) To learn how broad or narrow you will be able to make your claims.
e) To learn the State of the Art.
